Kind of predictable. A very typical retelling of Romero and Juliet without the death at the end. Has a very happy hollywood ending.
Yes, gang members and rich jocks ... pretty stereotypical set-up, but I liked the characters, Brittany Ellis and Alex Fuentes, and the references to Chicago area landmarks. The author was named Illinois Author of the Year by the Illinois Association of Teachers of English. It feels like this year's Lincoln nominees have more "local flavor" than in the past, doesn't it?
Yes, like the Chicago landmarks. Yet, had a hard time believing such a story would or could exist. There seem to be too many social barriers. But, never say never and anything is possible.
With the story, though, both characters challenge each other, force each other to question stereotypes and social norms, and to be individuals amongst group needs and identity.
